1.-31. The art of Ribe. Ribe Kunstmuseum’s collection of art contains a number of important motives from Ribe, painted by famous Danish artists. P. Ussing, J. Roed, Th. Brendstrup, Kr. Zahrtmann, J. Rohde, A. Gottschak, S. Swane etc. have all been here and have left several works with motives from town. These, complemented with a number of older and newer works, show town over the years, the way the artists have captured the atmosphere, lines, forms and colours. The farmer and the Icelandic horses: In the great manor the Icelandic horses graze and sparkles fly in the smithery. Have a chat with the farmer about farming and the many animals. The Viking ship Gisla: The Viking ship Gisla lies at the quay at the market place, the place representing the first Ribe – the cradle of Denmark. Here the smith, the glass pearl maker, the wood turner and the potter work side by side with traders offering their goods at a nice price. Taste, smell, listen and learn: The town of Ribe, in the year 825, has been reconstructed by the best Viking carpenter of Denmark. The town has many fun activities for the whole family; do some carving, play Viking games, ’Tor, Odin, Tyr’, down fights, bake bread, shooting with bow and arrow and much more. Meet the falconer; listen to the exiting stories of hunting with falcons, hawks and buzzards in the Viking Age. Experience the fantastic birds of prey and feel the excitement when the falcon dives over the audience to elegantly catch his reward in the air – a nice piece of meat. The story of Ribes founding 1300 years ago is now told in the fine Tinghus, where the chief of the village lives. The mural is an exiting piece of art and for new generations to enjoy. 1-4. Stub in Ribe. ”Stub in Ribe” is a new play written by the writer and dramatist Sten Kaalø. (In Danish). Den Danske Skueplads is lead by the actor and singer Christian Steffensen, and the play has its premiere in Ribe, where the poet Ambrosius Stub (1705-1758) lived his last years. Stub, who is sometimes called ”The Danish Bellman”, came to Ribe in 1753, where he lived next to bishop Brorson in Taarnborg. During his years in Ribe, Stub worked as a teacher and made his way through life on loans and handouts. The play ”Stub in Ribe” is the story of an artist and his struggle to survive. With focus on the 1700 years and the play, educational material is made for the oldest school grades and high school. Place: Ribelund Festsal, Kastanie Allé, Ribe.

5.-11. Cattle market in Ribe. Trade was crucial for the founding of Ribe and its importance throughout the Viking Age. Things indicate that the greatest export good of Ribe were living animals. Cows and sheep were easy to breed in the marsh and were exported in large numbers via the market at the river of Ribe. Ribe’s location and the wide marsh meadows made Ribe the perfect place for gathering the cattle in the region. Maybe the cattle markets were even the economic basis of the market place!
Try it yourself: Come see a busy cattle market at Ribe VikingeCenter. Walk through the time gate, wear a cape and step into the Viking Age. All the big animals are centered on the manor, and you can help feed them. Then the animals must be brought to the market place, where they will be sold at a good price. The purpose of the museum is to show, how life was lived in an institution with rough conditions for people. Further the great development of Ribelund over the years is clarified. 12.-18. The battle for the market at the river of Ribe. A battle is in the air at Ribe VikingeCenter! Frisian traders established the market place at the river in Ribe, which developed into being a national centre with potential to become even more important. The Danish Vikings don’t like that idea at all. The chief wants to brush off the Frisians at take over. During the day, he sends out several spies to the market place to rant the atmosphere. The craftsmen and traders on the market try to stay neutral, but the conflict is heating up and they have to choose sides. The tone is rough and the tense situation ends in a gigantic battle that will make the ground move. Never has Ribe seen such a battle! Who will win? Enjoy this magnificent chance to see it all happen at Ribe VikingeCenter, but do not come between the great warriors!

16., 17. 18., 19., 20. and 21. July. Wadden Sea Regatta 2010. Old prams and other wooden ships go on the Wadden Sea regatta which starts in Ribe in 2010. The ships come in via the river of Ribe and out through the sluice Kammerslusen. The Wadden Sea Regatta underlines Ribes importance for shipping through centuries. After the start in Ribe 4 weeks of sailing on the old trade routes in the Wadden Sea follow, where Ribe was an important centre. Place: Ribe Å from Skibbroen to Kammerslusen. 18.-22. See the art of combat. Esbjerg City Taekwondo Klub is hosting Dansk Taekwondo Forbunds official summer camp with more than 1000 national and international participants. Among the instructors of the camp are two American Olympic Medal winners, as well as some of the best Danish taekwondo performers. In addition to the taekwondo training, there will be theme training in e. g. medieval combat art, dance etc. Feel free to drop by and enjoy the sentiment in the camp. 19.-25. The Ribe Vikings meet the Saxons and the Frisians. In the Viking Age, the important trade routes were seaborne. Ribe was as such a centre for trade in northern, southern, eastern and western directions and Ribe was certainly a trade centre in the early 700 years between Western Europe and the rest of Scandinavia. The Saxons and Frisians were in close contact with Ribe. The comb maker from Dorestad has so left clear traces on the market place. In his beautiful and regular combs you see that he was a professional craftsman. Also the locksmith came a long way from Utrecht to Ribe. He made very accurate keys and locks for all purposes. Meet the comb maker and the locksmith at Ribe VikingeCenter, where they work. Daily guided tours to the foreign craftsmen and traders, visiting Ribe VikingeCenter this summer. All tell about their techniques, trade routes and the encounter between cultures.

Esbjerg City Taekwondo Klub is hosting Dansk Taekwondo Forbunds official summer camp with more than 1000 national and international participants. 22.-25. Music of the Viking Age with KRAUKA. Krauka takes us to the musical universe of the Vikings. Based on Nordic myths and stories, they offer the music to go with them as they may have sounded at the fireplace 1000 years ago. Krauka play on reconstructions of the authentic instruments of the Viking Age, e.g. Lyra, flute, lur and drums. Listen to Krauka at Ribe VikingeCenter. 23.-25. Ribe Jazz Festival. The Jazz Festival looks back on 50 years of jazz history in Ribe with themed concerts. 25.-31. Vikings on Icelandic horseback. It is small, strong and faithful. The Icelandic horse is a direct descendant of the horses, the Vikings brought home from Iceland in the 9. Century. The race has kept all its good qualities and even masters five paces: trot, walk, gallop, pas and tölt. The Vikings and their Icelandic horses show off at Ribe VikingeCenter. The horses show all their paces and also the tölt, which only the Icelandic horses can. When the horse is tölting, it always has at least one leg on the ground and the rider is sitting almost completely still. This way, the horse and rider can move over long, steep and uneven distances without getting tired. Did you know that the best Viking riders can tölte with a glass of beer without spilling a drop? 29. Ribelund’s Museum. Ribelund’s over 100 year history is exhibited at Ribelund’s Museum. In the museum, life and everyday routines at Ribelund from the founding in 1907 is shown in pictures, effects and the stories told by the museum staff. The purpose of the museum is to show, how life was lived in an institution with rough conditions for people. Further the great development of Ribelund over the years is clarified. Place: Ribelunds Museum, Bøge Alle 6, Ribe. Time: 10-16.

30. Ribe Cattle Show. For mor e than 140 years, the Animal Fair has taken place on Hovedengen in Ribe. Taste some of the regional delicacies at the horse show, pigs race, children’s animal fair, trampoline jumping, musical entertainment and of course the fair itself. Singers and musicians from The Royal Opera play Verdi’s heartbreaking love story about the mistress Violetta, who finds true love in young Alfredo Germont and gives up her easygoing life to follow her heart. A story of the finest love being forced to untamed sacrifice and jealousy as a guest on the edge of all feelings. Surrender to Verdi’s great music with charming baryton's and seductive sopranos. Lean back and enjoy the emotions, feel the love, the pain and the desire. A feeling run through this classical piece and insists on the foolishness of being in love, the madness of jealousy and the love’s eternal innocence.
