The Wadden Sea will probably be announced National Park in October – but what day???

 

1.-31. Vadehavscentret – midst the National Park Wadden Sea
Vadehavscentret has exhibitions about the Wadden Sea, storm floods, nature and animal life to offer. All year through tours into nature or to see black sun take place as well as there are special exhibitions and activities for the whole family. Place: Vadehavscentret, Okholmvej 5, Vester Vedsted. Time: All days from 10-17.

 

1.-30. Vikings in new robes.

We present our new and improved exhibition in Ribe’s oldest period, from 700-1050. The latest 18 years of research mean that we must re-write history. Enjoy this new and exciting exhibition with new challenges for children. Place: Museet Ribes Vikinger, Odins Plads, Ribe.

 

1.-31. Why Ribe?

Who founded Ribe in the year 700? What is Ribe around the year 900? … and many other important questions. Activity exhibition for all. Enjoy this exhibition with all your senses and you might find the answers. Place: Museet Ribes Vikinger, Odins Plads, Ribe.

  

1.-31. "Kristine and Rolf" - two medieval children.
Learn about daily life for children in the Middle Ages. Visit the room where you can put on medieval clothing and armour. Play medieval games, have a look in the kitchen - smell the spices and the dried cod. Place yuor head in the pillory, etc. 

 

1. - 31. Rent a bike at the hostel. Try a bicycle ride from Ribe to Kammerslusen, along the Ribe Dike and the Wadden Sea, you follow the North Sea Cycle Route to Mandø Ebbevej and the Wadden Sea Centre. Continue along the Ribe marshland and back to Ribe. Approx. 25 km.

 

1.-31. My Ribe and Wadden Sea

Great photo exhibition at Danhostel Ribe. Over 50 large photos on canvas show the inhabitants of Ribe, their town and nature. All captured with a wink by Gudrun Rishede. Place: Danhostel Ribe, Sct. Peders Gade 16, Ribe. Price: Free.

 

1.-24. The art of Ribe.
Ribe Kunstmuseum’s collection of art contains a number of important motives from Ribe, painted by famous Danish artists. P. Ussing, J. Roed, Th. Brendstrup, Kr. Zahrtmann, J. Rohde, A. Gottschak, S. Swane etc. have all been here and have left several works with motives from town. These, complemented with a number of older and newer works, show town over the years, the way the artists have captured the atmosphere, lines, forms and colours. Tales and stories have also been inspiration for artistic works over the years, such as the tale of Queen Dagmar. Place: Ribe Kunstmuseum, Quedens Gård, Sortebrødregade 1. Price: Free entrance.

 

1.-22. Experience Ribe in the Viking Age. Go back 1300 years and experience life in three magnificent Viking sceneries from the oldest town in Denmark. Meet the craftsmen, farmers and inhabitants of the Viking Age, and experience great things to remember. At Ribe VikingeCenter you get close to it all. The farmer and the Icelandic horses: In the great manor the Icelandic horses graze and sparkles fly in the smithery. Have a chat with the farmer about farming and the many animals.  The Viking ship Gisla: The Viking ship Gisla lies at the quay at the market place, the place representing the first Ribe – the cradle of Denmark. Here the smith, the glass pearl maker, the wood turner and the potter work side by side with traders offering their goods at a nice price. Taste, smell, listen and learn: The town of Ribe, in the year 825, has been reconstructed by the best Viking carpenter of Denmark. The town has many fun activities for the whole family; do some carving, play Viking games, ’Tor, Odin, Tyr’, down fights,  bake bread, shooting with bow and arrow and much more. Place: Ribe VikingeCenter, Lustrupvej 4, Ribe. 1.-22. See the prey birds of the Viking Age. Meet the falconer; listen to the exiting stories of hunting with falcons, hawks and buzzards in the Viking Age. Experience the fantastic birds of prey and feel the excitement when the falcon dives over the audience to elegantly catch his reward in the air – a nice piece of meat.   Place: Ribe VikingeCenter, Lustrupvej 4, Ribe. Time: Falcon show Monday – Friday 12.30.

 

1.-22. The history of the Vikings - painted on the wall of the Viking house
As in other cultures, the Vikings also had the tradition to capture great events in pictures. At Ribe VikingeCenter we do the same now! The story of Ribe’s founding 1300 years ago is now told in the fine Tinghus, where the chief of the village lives. The mural is an exciting piece of art and for new generations to enjoy. Watch as we decorate the clay walls. Try it yourself: Make your own piece of art. Paint lovely Viking motives with paint and brushes of the Vikings. Place: Ribe VikingeCenter, Lustrupvej 4, Ribe. 7. Ribelund’s Museum
Ribelund’s over 100 year history is exhibited at Ribelund’s Museum. In the museum, life and everyday routines at Ribelund from the founding in 1907 is shown in pictures, effects and the stories told by the museum staff. The purpose of the museum is to show, how life was lived in an institution with rough conditions for people. Further the great development of Ribelund over the years is clarified. Place: Ribelunds Museum, Bøge Alle 6, Ribe. Time: 10-16.

9. Geese tour with ranger from the Wadden Sea Centre
Introduction (in Danish) at the Wadden Sea Centre. Afterward in the Wadden Sea you must be able to walk 6 km. Meeting point: Vadehavscentret, Okholmvej 5, Vester Vedsted, 6760 Ribe. The tour will last 4-5 hours from 10am. Price:  Grownups/children D. kr. 120/60,-. if we go to Mandø (tickets included ) / Price:  Grownups/children D. kr. 50/30,- if we  stay at the main land. Remember to order lunch packet at the hostel. Tel. 75446161 to get tickets.

 

9.  Organ Concert in Ribe Cathedral
Organ concert with Henry Fairs, Birmingham under Vestjysk Organ Festival.

17. Ribe’s Night of Culture – The best of all times in Ribe
Culture Night in the medieval streets of Ribe. Enjoy music, art, history, drama, theater etc. The Night of Culture will use Ribe’s historical scenery and take you back 1300 years. The opening will be really spectacular with a play about Hans Jessen Søhane and the pirates from 1573. Hans Thiemes’ story with over 30 actors takes place at Skibbroen and the river.  Arrangements in the cathedral, in the hostel’s sports hall, in the Viking museum, at the library, at Quedens, etc. The night ends with a great concert in the cathedral. Price: Armlet for the events, buy it at event places.


17th. to 24th. Follow the autumn work for the farmers and their wives at farms in old days. Hygum Hjemstavnsgaard.
11am-4pm. Wednesday 20th. Oct.: Potato day.

 

18. – 22. The Old Town Hall will be open from 1pm. To 3 pm. The Old Town Hall is a small museum in the former debtor's prison. On display are, among others, the Night Watchman’s spiked mace and the executioner’s sword and thumb screws.  The Old Town Hall was Denmark’s oldest functioning city hall until 2007. Although most of the official functions now have been moved to Esbjerg, official receptions and civil weddings still take place at the Old City Hall.

 

18.-23.  The Night Watchmen in Ribe. Take the tour with the night watchmen in Ribe hear about the town’s history and listen to the watchmen’s song. Place: Streets of Ribe, meeting point in front of Ribe Turistbureau, Torvet, Ribe.
Time: At 20.00. Price: Free.

 

18.-22. Fall activities with the Vikings in Ribe
Ribe VikingeCenter is full of life and activities during the fall holiday, where you can go through the time warp, dress in a cape and meet the world of the Vikings. Be part of the chief’s family and help thrash the corn, bake bread, get wood and wash dishes.  
You hear the horses, when the Vikings and their Icelandic horses get ready for the show. Try shooting with bow and arrow; see the exciting show of the falconer.
Try it yourself: Make your own wooden knife or flute. Or join the Vikings in making a felt ball or a lucky coin. Place: Ribe VikingeCenter, Lustrupvej 4, Ribe. Time: All days from 10-15.30.
