1.-30. Vadehavscentret – midst the National Park Wadden Sea
Vadehavscentret has exhibitions about the Wadden Sea, storm floods, nature and animal life to offer. All year through tours into nature or to see black sun take place as well as there are special exhibitions and activities for the whole family. Place: Vadehavscentret, Okholmvej 5, Vester Vedsted. 1.-30. The art of Ribe. Ribe Kunstmuseum’s collection of art contains a number of important motives from Ribe, painted by famous Danish artists. P. Ussing, J. Roed, Th. Brendstrup, Kr. Zahrtmann, J. Rohde, A. Gottschak, S. Swane etc. have all been here and have left several works with motives from town. These, complemented with a number of older and newer works, show town over the years, the way the artists have captured the atmosphere, lines, forms and colours. Tales and stories have also been inspiration for artistic works over the years, such as the tale of Queen Dagmar. Place: Ribe Kunstmuseum, Quedens Gård, Sortebrødregade 1. Price: Free entrance.

1.-30. Vikings in new robes. We present our new and improved exhibition in Ribe’s oldest period, from 700-1050. The latest 18 years of research mean that we must re-write history. Enjoy this new and exciting exhibition with new challenges for children. Place: Museet Ribes Vikinger, Odins Plads, Ribe.

 


1.-30. Experience Ribe in the Viking Age. Go back 1300 years and experience life in three magnificent Viking sceneries from the oldest town in Denmark. Meet the craftsmen, farmers and inhabitants of the Viking Age, and experience great things to remember. At Ribe VikingeCenter you get close to it all. The farmer and the Icelandic horses: In the great manor the Icelandic horses graze and sparkles fly in the smithery. Have a chat with the farmer about farming and the many animals.  The Viking ship Gisla: The Viking ship Gisla lies at the quay at the market place, the place representing the first Ribe – the cradle of Denmark. Here the smith, the glass pearl maker, the wood turner and the potter work side by side with traders offering their goods at a nice price. Taste, smell, listen and learn: The town of Ribe, in the year 825, has been reconstructed by the best Viking carpenter of Denmark. The town has many fun activities for the whole family; do some carving, play Viking games, ’Tor, Odin, Tyr’, down fights,  bake bread, shooting with bow and arrow and much more. Place: Ribe VikingeCenter, Lustrupvej 4, Ribe. 1.-30. See the prey birds of the Viking Age. Meet the falconer; listen to the exiting stories of hunting with falcons, hawks and buzzards in the Viking Age. Experience the fantastic birds of prey and feel the excitement when the falcon dives over the audience to elegantly catch his reward in the air – a nice piece of meat.   Place: Ribe VikingeCenter, Lustrupvej 4, Ribe. 1.-30. My Ribe and Wadden Sea. Great photo exhibition at Danhostel Ribe. Over 50 large photos on canvas show the inhabitants of Ribe, their town and nature. All captured with a wink by Gudrun Rishede. Place: Danhostel Ribe, Sct. Peders Gade 16, Ribe.

1. - 30. Rent a bike at the hostel. Try a bicycle ride from Ribe to Kammerslusen, along the Ribe Dike and the Wadden Sea, you follow the North Sea Cycle Route to Mandø Ebbevej and the Wadden Sea Centre. Continue along the Ribe marshland and back to Ribe. Approx. 25 km.

 

1.-15 .  The Night Watchmen in Ribe. Take the tour with the night watchmen in Ribe hear about the town’s history and listen to the watchmen’s song. Place: Streets of Ribe, meeting point in front of Ribe Turistbureau, Torvet, Ribe.

2. Ribelund’s Museum
Ribelund’s over 100 year history is exhibited at Ribelund’s Museum. In the museum, life and everyday routines at Ribelund from the founding in 1907 is shown in pictures, effects and the stories told by the museum staff. The purpose of the museum is to show, how life was lived in an institution with rough conditions for people. Further the great development of Ribelund over the years is clarified. Place: Ribelunds Museum, Bøge Alle 6, Ribe. Time: 10-16.

 

2.-5. Rued Langgaard Festival. The Danish composer Rued Langgaard (1893-1952) composed more than 400 works and was organist in the cathedral from 1940-1952. Ribe Cathedral, Ribe Music Association and the Rued Langgaard Association host the festival, which is a celebration of Rued Langgaard’s music. The theme of the 2010 festival will be Schumann and Langgaard, since the composer Robert Schumann is celebrating his 200 year anniversary in 2010. The Program further contains a new Ribe symphony by the composer Bo Gunge, premiered by Sønderjyllands Symfoniorkester. Further the festival has a solo concert with pianist Amalie Malling, an organ concert with professor Ulrik Spang-Hanssen and music show with Signe Asmussen, soprano, Berit Johansen Tange, piano and narrator Esben Tange to offer.

3.-4. Ribe Wine Festival. Ribe Wine Festival is hosted by The Little Wine Club and is a big, open wine market with smaller tents in the pedestrian zone of the town. About 20 wine importers have samples and tell about the different wines. There are stands with equipment and samples of cheese, olives, sausage, oil etc. Further there will be various special samples to taste and wine events. The sample glass for the festival can be bought at the glass stand. Place: Streets of Ribe. Time: Further information will follow. Price: Depending on content of the event.

 

3.-5. Nordic Book bus convention. 30 – 40 book busses from the Northern countries and Germany visit Ribe. Come and see the many book busses, all decorated in various ways. Place: Hovedengen, Danhostel Ribe. Time: All day.Price: Free.

4.-12. Wadden Sea Festival and Legend Symphony. The Culture Region Wadden Sea is hosting the Wadden Sea Festival with musical and artistic events from Blåvandshuk to the Tønder marsh. The project Legend Symphony is an educational project, a 3D light installation and a web TV project by the Danish audio artist Hans Sydow, the TV man Ketil Teisen, author Gerd Laugesen and musician Anne Eltard. Four places in Varde, on Fanø, Esbjerg and Tønder will be picked for telling and showing the legends and stories. All is ending in Ribe with a great event. Place: Ribe, Varde, Tønder, Esbjerg, Fanø.

6.-9. From corn to bread and pulp. At this season harvest is an important task; stocks must be filled up for the winter to feed people and animals. The farmer at Ribe VikingCenter is thrashing the corn before it is sorted and prepared. Try it yourself: Help thrashing the corn. Then bake bread and make pulp.  Place: Ribe VikingeCenter, Lustrupvej 4, Ribe. Time: All days from 10-15.30.

9.-14. American.

"American" is a spectacular musical dramatic idea of achieving "The American Dream". Journalist, photographer and the social reformer Jacob A. Riis (1849-1914) emigrated as a young man from Ribe to New York and got his photo documentation and his journalistic work of great importance for social policy in contemporary United States.
The show will world premiere in Riis' hometown of Ribe in the city's 1,300 th anniversary in September 2010 and subsequently on tour in Germany and abroad. American is a hybrid show, where latest fotoprojicerings technology combined with classic songs and music, dance and theater.
The idea has received support from National Arts Council Music Dramatic pool, Ribe Jubilee v / Esbjerg Kommune, Bikuben Fund, Ministry of Culture Pot to culture throughout the country, Danish Artist Union, Danish drama Federal and Aarhus Public Culture Udviklingspulje.

15.-17. Conference on tourism and architecture. The municipality of Esbjerg invites to 3 days of focus on Ribe and the development of old European towns. The participants are representatives from European Association of Old Towns, partner towns and other towns of interest. The conference focuses on architecture, town preservation, development and tourism.

19. The day of wanderers at the drove road
Dansk Vandrelaugs Esbjergafdeling is hosting a day on the historic cattle drift way. The tour passes by Riber Kjærgård, Vilslev Spang, Gredstedbro and then to Ribe. Length: about 15 km. Sign up: On 17. September at the latest on tel. 75 13 11 75. Place: We meet at Esbjerg Grønttorv and drive to Ribe.

20.-24. From cow to shoe. The leather smith is busy making scabbards, belts and straps from ox, horse, sheep and goat leather. Leather shoes and boots were much used, so he had plenty to do.  
At Ribe VikingeCenter, animals were slaughtered and the hides must be tanned.  See how the leather smith works and makes a pair of shoes.

24. History of the subjects
Ribe Katedralskole is hosting this day of fun. Day of the subject’s show how Ribe Katedralskole is connected to town and region. Taking its basis in the history of town and school, involving theatre, music, literature, science, historic persons etc. The school, the school yard and other places are transformed into a market place with many activities, some of them at stands. At one stand you can listen to renaissance music and dance, at another the every day life of a student in 1600 years and contemporary Ribe is told, at a third stand there is science shows for alchemists. Experience the subjects from a different and historic angle: sports, historical games, music, history, languages, chemistry etc.  Place: Ribe Katedralskole, Puggaardsgade 22, Ribe. Time: From 14-20.

24. Friday matinee at Café Hjørnet
Café Hjørnet is operated by the home guidance unit in Ribe and by disabled persons. We celebrate Ribes 1300 year anniversary by inviting all in to historical lectures and music, some theater and fun. In cooperation with the institution Åholmen, the windows of the café are decorated with photo collages from the history of inhabitants and the art group is working with the theme ”Ribe 1300 years”. 25.-26. Conference of night watchmen in the oldest town of Denmark
Danmarks Vægterlaug meets up for a conference in Ribe and performs all over this old town. Ribe is having watchmen walks throughout summer and now you can meet watchmen from other Danish towns. Everyone is welcome to join them on their round.

26. Ribe’s history told from the back of an Icelandic horse. DREKI is hosting a great show on Hovedengen. Ribe’s history is told from the Viking Age to now as well as a peak into the future. Come see the Icelandic horses and enjoy the show at 14.00 as well as the stands and activities.

30. Quedens Gaard – a trader’s house from the Renaissance. Come in and see how school service looks in Quedens Gård. Visit the historical place, learn about the renaissance and hear more about our educational programs for school children.

30. Walking through medieval Ribe
A guided tour through Ribe, where children aged 0-6 years and their parents can learn about medieval Ribe. The tour ends at Riberhus Slotsbanke with the story about Queen Dagmar. NB! The children must be escorted by an adult.
