Ribe is Denmark's and Scandinavia's oldest town. Ribe's history can be traced back to the early Viking Age in the beginning of the 8th century - more precisely between 704 and 710. A piece of wood from a well proves the age of the town. It is now on view at Ribe Viking Museum and you can say it is Ribe’s Birth Certificate.

The Museum Ribe’s Vikings – Museum of the Viking era and the Middle Ages. Thousands of artifacts found during recent archaeological excavations in Ribe. You will be taken on a historical journey from the year 700 to the year 1700 and right through Ribe's dramatic history. In the Halls of historic experiences you will find yourself in the middle of a Viking market in Ribe in the year 800, at the harbor is a Viking ship and you can step into it. In another hall you can imagine being in Ribe in the year 1500. The baker's wife is waiting for customers, the children are playing, a church is being built and a grave is being dug. Maybe the person died from the plague. You can also see a film about Vikings in Ribe and the children can play in the Medieval playroom "Kristine and Rolf”, put on medieval clothes and learn how medieval children’s lived in Denmark. They can also excavate in the archeological sandpit.

    Different activities and exhibitions during the year. 

    Ghost Walks. Every Wednesday at 9pm to 10pm in July and August. Walk
    through the old streets and listen to the dramas of regicides and witch
    burnings. Ghost Walk and other guided tours can be arranged for groups
    all year. 
    Queen Dagmar. Exhibition from June 2012. Ribe commemorates the
    beloved Queen Dagmar who died at Riberhus Castle in Ribe 800 years ago
    Rune stone. At the Viking Museum you can see the rune stone that has
    newly been found in Ribe. Read more

 

Ribe Viking Centre - Ribe when the Vikings lived and ruled here. Take a journey 1300 years back in time and you will walk in the market place as it was in Ribe at that time. You will meet the Vikings, talk to them, see what they are doing – and much of it you can try yourself. Viking Centre reconstructs and revitalizes the culture which formed the base of the Viking eras grandeur. See the falconer and his birds of prey, the main farm and Icelandic horses and the Viking ship docked by the market place.

Denmark's largest Viking market Approximately 300 Vikings journey to Ribe. In 2012 the Viking Market will last from 30th Apr. to 6th. May. Sat. 10am – 5pm, Sat. 10am – 4pm. Other days 10am - 4.30pm
