Middle Ages and the Renaissance

  • Denmark’s first church was built in Ribe by Ansgar, the Apostle of the North, who converted the Danes to Christianity. Later, Ribe Cathedral was built, but in more durable materials. The Cathedral has a story all its own.
  • Town Walk through medieval Ribe. Ribe is the oldest town in Denmark. It is also the best-preserved medieval town in Denmark - therefore a walk through Ribe is like a walk through Ribe's and Denmark's history.
  • The beloved Queen Dagmar, who was married to King Valdemar the Victorious, and who according to legend, became ill and then died at Riberhus Castle, but awoke from the dead to speak for the last time with her beloved husband and king.
  • Maren Spliid, who was accused of witchcraft because Didrik, the tailor became ill and vomited a strange and seemingly alive substance into a bowl. This substance became the most important piece of evidence against Maren, who was burned at the stake on Ribe Gallows.
  • Ribe’s Night Watchman. The Night Watchman took care of the Ribe town locals for hundreds of years. He made sure that late at night, they reached their homes safe and secure from thieves and criminals. The Ribe town locals slept secure in the knowledge that the Night Watchman would warn them of storm surges, flooding and fires.
  • Storm surges. Many storm surges have, through time, flooded Ribe.   At regular intervals the marshes have been flooded and houses and roads destroyed. It is understandable why the citizens of Ribe fear storm surges, The North Sea  - and global warming and climate change .
  • The pirate Morten Thode. In 1555, he and all his men were beheaded. To create fear and to also warn others, the pirate’s heads were put on stakes and placed in Hovedengen. Danhostel Ribe Youth and Family Hostel is situated in the middle of Hovedengen (the Head Meadow).
